Bulldogs take over first in Rowe, Elks upset Sackville again

Bulldogs take over first in Rowe, Elks upset Sackville again

The Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs have been chasing the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles all season for first place in the Sid Rowe Division, that chase finally paid off as the Bulldogs took a 1 point lead over the Jr. Eagles following their 8-2 win over the Jr. Miners in Membertou Saturday evening.

 
In saying this, the Bulldogs have yet to clinch first place as they still have two regular season games remaining, tonight in Trenton against the County Scotians and the huge game on the final night of the regular season Thursday in Eskasoni when the Bulldogs and Jr. Eagles meet head on.  Eskasoni besides their game with Antigonish, will play Tuesday night in Port Hawkesbury.
 
As for the contest with the Jr. Miners, the Jr. Bulldogs improved to 19-8-1 for 39 points, overtaking the Jr. Eagles by a single point as the Jr. Eagles are now 19-9-0 for 38 points.  The important thing about this race for first place is that whoever ends up in first place will have approximately 7 days to rest as they will earn a first round bye in the opening round of the playoffs while the second place team will have to play in a Best-of-Five Preliminary Playoff Round against the Jr. Miners.
 
The Bulldogs had little difficulty with the Jr. Miners taking period leads of 2-1 and 4-1 before scoring four more times in the third period.  Will Normandeau and Luc Legere who also collected three assists scored in the opening frame for the Bulldogs while Deakin McPhee tallied for the Jr. Miners.
 
In the second, Owen Flemmng and Owen Forsythe with their first of two each in the game scored for the Bulldogs.
 
In the third, Brady Doucette brought the Jr. Miners back to within a pair before the Bulldogs scored four consecutive goals to make the final 8-2.  Flemming and Forsythe on the power-play both added their second goals while Ryan Laton and Jake Prince scored the other Antigonish goals.  Logan McGrath assisted on five of the eight Bulldog goals to increase is season total to 13.  The Bulldogs outshot the Jr. Miners 44-26.

For a second consecutive day, this time in Brookfield, the Elks upended the Sackville Blazers, this time 6-4.  Despite trailing 4-1 to the Blazers, the Elks rallied with five consecutive goals, two in the second and three unanswered in the third.
 
The Blazers went up 3-1 after twenty minutes on goals from Dylan Probert, Brody Fitzpatrick and Tristan LeBlanc who scored the first of his two to go along with an assists.  Brady Croft connected with his first of two for the Elks.
 
In the second, Sackville went ahead 4-1 on LeBlanc’s second of the game before Cole Schofield and Jacob MacLellan with his first of two on the night along with two assists brought the Elks to within 4-3 entering the third period.
 
In the third, it was all Elks as MacLellan and Croft both scored their second goals and the other was scored by Kaleb MacVicar to make the final 6-4 and provide the Elks with their 5th win of the season.  Hayden Doiron collected thee assists for the Elks who were outshot 53-37 by the Blazers.  Brookfield concludes their regular season on the Holiday Monday afternoon when they play the South Shore Lumberjacks in Bridgewater.
